Koda is a music rights organization in Denmark with 52,000 members, including composers, songwriters, and music publishers. The organization ensures that members are paid when their music is played in public spaces.

Koda’s website serves multiple purposes. It functions as an information hub, offering insights into the industry, Koda’s work, events, and more. At the same time, it provides self-service tools for members and a licensing portal for purchasing music rights for public use. The website is a critical touchpoint for Koda’s interaction with all its audiences.

Koda wanted a comprehensive modernization of their entire technology stack for web development.

The goal of the first phase was to make the right technology choices, implement necessary changes to workflows, and establish the foundation for modernizing Koda’s frontend in the years to come.

We supported Koda with guidance on selecting their technology stack and took part in the development project for the relaunch of their new website, while also maintaining the previous platform in parallel. The work was carried out in a hybrid setup, collaborating closely with Koda’s in-house development team.

The project resulted in a complete overhaul of the technology stack. Hosting was moved to Azure Cloud, and Sanity CMS was introduced as the new CMS platform. Next.js was used to build a modern frontend. At the same time, we helped Koda implement processes, branching, and pipelines in DevOps, fostering an agile mindset with code reviews and daily releases.

During the project, we evaluated several headless CMS platforms. After thorough research and a proof-of-concept phase comparing competing systems, Sanity CMS was chosen as the best fit for Koda’s needs.

Sanity CMS meets a key requirement from Koda to prioritize systems and platforms that make ongoing development and maintenance easy and efficient, while also helping to retain and attract skilled developers.

About Koda

Koda is a music rights organization with more than 51,000 members, including composers, songwriters, and music publishers.

They work to ensure that composers, songwriters, and music publishers receive fair payment for the use of their music and to make the music industry more sustainable—socially, environmentally, and economically.

Problem

Multiple legacy applications within the web landscape with isolated purposes made ongoing development inefficient and slow.

Need for new, more structured workflows to optimize the development process.

Hosting of old platforms on premises, with a desire to move to cloud hosting.

Solution

Selection of new platforms and technology tailored to Koda’s future needs.

Implementation in collaboration with Koda’s developers and Product Owner of improved workflows based on DevOps principles as part of the project.

Consolidation of diverse technology stacks into a unified CMS platform, frontend, and cloud hosting.

Value

Maintained operations of the existing legacy systems while simultaneously implementing new technologies.

Improved consistency in task definition, prioritization, and execution to support efficient ongoing development.

Shorter time-to-market with faster releases, effective testing environments, and better onboarding to the project.

Modern tech stack now supports Koda’s strategic goal of a more robust frontend architecture.
